May is for Mike (Flanagan)
From Oculus to Haunting of Hill House, Mike Flanagan knows how to direct great slow-burn horror.
Like many folks out there, I watched Netflix's "The Haunting of Hill Hause" and loved every minute. Only years later after watching and enjoying "Midnight Mass" did I realize that the director was the same, and that he also did a bunch of other pretty good scary movies. Having already seen Hush and Gerald's Game, and having liked all of these, I thought hell let's do a Month of Mike and bang out the rest of his filmography. So here we are!
Mike Flanagan blasted off into horror culture in an unlikely way: he raised $23,000 on Kickstarter to finance his first feature-length film, and our first film of the month, Absentia. To be fair, he was coming hot off an acclaimed short film "Oculus" which inspired a full length film by the same name and is our second pick.
Next up we go back to basics and see how our boy does writing a sequel to a movie about a haunted board game, Ouija: Origin of Evil. And we close out the month with Doctor Sleep, which is only here because I haven't seen it and I probably should. Are these last two going to top the charts? Probably not, but hey it's important to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a Director with as much talent as Flanagan and I can't stomach the idea of watching *that scene* from Gerald's Game ever again so here we are.
