I really wanted to like this film. The concept is great - earth is angry, the enviro-hippy told the shitty oil man so, etc. The outdoor shots of the frozen north were excellent. There were also a few great scenes: that kid walked halfway across the tundra butt naked, finding the abandoned construction trucks, the first time they saw the "monolith" aka the well, etc.
It had a great "The Thing" vibe from the very beginning, and we even got a little bit of found footage including an extremely Blair Witch shot. (I love found footage but I recognize that's a controversial opinion). I was even scared for a bit until I realized I didn't care at all about any of the characters.
That being said, the acting was pretty bad, the music was awful (why so much piano around the deaths, this is a horror flick not a tear-jerking drama), and the special effects.....Wow.
Finally, the ending made literally no sense at all. This doesn't get a rewatch but I give it a solid C - remember, it's not about the destination it's about the journey.
The Last Winter had several elements of suspense: the remoteness of the location, the isolation, the brutal weather, environmental changes, and some spiritual aspects mixed in. I liked the beginning and the buildup as people began to suspect something weird was happening. The characters were interesting although the movie did not go very deep into their unique personalities. It was creepy rather than scary for me. It built to some suspense, but ultimately fell flat for me. The ending left me baffled.
